Here in the US – and in much of Europe – money is no longer king. Credit cards have made a name for themselves and people use them to pay for anything from a new car to a pack of gum.

We love credit cards in the US. You see ads for them posted all over town, on TV and on the internet. Your bank is likely calling and emailing you with credit card offers all the time. I can’t count how many unpaid cards I get in the mail, and no matter how much I tell them to stop sending them, they keep coming in like a flood.

These days, there are hundreds of travel rewards credit cards. With so many cards to choose from, it’s hard to know which ones are good for travel and which ones aren’t worth it.

It can be especially confusing trying to navigate all the credit card perks, loyalty programs, benefits, offers, arcane rules and hidden fees.

It’s confusing that many people pick the first thing they see and call it a day. Or, even worse, they give up and use a debit card instead.

A travel credit card is a fantastic tool that you can use to get free flights, travel expenses and hotel stays, all without spending a fortune.

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Credit Cards

In this article, I’m going to tell you how to get the best travel credit card easily so you can maximize your points and get free travel, because it’s that easy while you wait.

Travel credit cards offer great opportunities to earn free points that can be redeemed for flights, hotels or cash. In the race to win over customers, credit card and travel companies are partnering with each other (or just offering their own cards) to attract customers through the acceptance process, loyalty points, special discounts and more.

Their desire to get you, the customer, is your real benefit. By milking the system, you can get lots of free plane tickets, hotel rooms, vacations, and even cash back.

I won almost a million just from the welcome offer. I earn a lot of points every year; it would take a whole book to list them alone.

And as long as you can pay off your credit card every month, you can earn points and miles that you can redeem for free travel.

The first thing you should know is that no travel card is perfect. Each card offers different benefits to suit different lifestyles, budgets and travel goals.

I use an AMEX card for airline bookings (3x points per dollar spent), card_name for my everyday expenses, a separate Chase card for my phone bills (5x points), and card_name for my business expenses. I have friends who just want cash back and others who just want United miles.

Are you interested in brand loyalty, free rewards or avoiding debt? Do you want to earn rewards and accept offers for free flights or just want a card that doesn’t charge you for using it at Brazilian hotels?

Is celebrity status the most important benefit to you? Need points that you can use for anything, like cash?

If you just need points to stay where you want, get a Chase or American Express card because you can use their points at various travel agencies. Each has its own rewards program (Chase Ultimate Rewards and American Express Membership Rewards), points can be transferred to many airline or hotel partners and used for travel directly from their site.

I’m not interested in cash back cards because I travel so often that points, not cash back, are worth more to me.

Best Credit Cards For Beginners Of January 2024

Using a credit card that earns me airline miles or has a good transfer bonus and airline program is my go-to.

Find your goals and find cards that fit your goals and spending habits. By focusing on what you want first, you can increase your short-term goals as you learn how it works.

Applying for a credit card can be a bit more complicated. To help you focus and make sure you get the best card for you and your goals, here are six things I look for in a new card:

1. Great welcome bonus: The best travel cards give you great introductory offers. You will need to meet the minimum spend requirement (usually in the first few months) but these will be key points to start your travel account and get you closer to the free flight or stay and hotel.

Sometimes the deals are great enough to get you a few free flights. Don’t sign up for a card unless it offers a great welcome offer.

As a general guide, the welcome offer works like this: To get a great introductory offer, you must make a single purchase or meet a certain budget within a certain time period. After that, depending on the card, you can earn 1-5x points per dollar spent.

The most commonly accepted travel credit cards offer between 40,000 and 60,000 points, although they can sometimes go as high as 100,000. That’s why the card is great: you get an instant balance of thousands of points for one small transaction.

If you’re not sure if you can make the minimum threshold for a welcome gift, ask around to see if any friends or family plan to buy something big. If they let you put it on your card (and charge you money), you can go over the minimum spend threshold to get your welcome points.

2. Added spending style: Most credit cards offer one item for every dollar spent. However, a good credit card will give you points when you shop with merchants or, if it’s a branded credit card, with the same type. This will help you earn points faster.

I don’t want a dollar to be worth just one point. I want to be able to earn two or three points every time I spend a dollar.

For example, with card_name you earn 3x points on travel and hotel dining, card_name gives you 5x 5x on corporate spending and the American Express® Gold Card gives you 3x points on flights. I can earn points when I book with the company card on that carrier (ie Delta flights with a Delta card).

That’s what you want. Never accept one point per dollar spent. Find at least two. (Some cards offer up to 6 points per dollar spent.)

3. Minimum spend – Unfortunately, in order to get the maximum cashback these cards offer, there is usually a minimum spend requirement. While there are ways to increase your spending temporarily, it’s best to get the money through a daily budget. I am applying for a card with a small required budget of 1000-3000 USD in three to six months.

Some cards only require you to make a purchase to be accepted (these are my favorite types of accepted cards).

While you shouldn’t avoid minimum spend cards since they have great rewards, it’s a good idea to start small because you don’t want to end up with too many cards that you can’t spend the minimum amount on. Once you get the card, you cannot apply for the card. Only apply for the card where you earn the minimum amount to qualify for the welcome bonus.

Managing your ability to meet the minimum spend requirement is critical because if you spend more than you do just to earn these points, the points are no longer zero. Spend only what before and not a penny more.

4. Have a special trip: All of these travel credit cards offer great benefits. Many will give you special loyalty points or other benefits. Here are my main benefits:

Using a travel credit card isn’t just about earning points and miles, it’s something else that comes with these cards that make my life so much easier.

5. Low Annual Fees – No one likes paying annual fees for a credit card. Most corporate brand credit card fees range from $50 to $95 per year. For people who travel a lot and fly a lot, I think so
